Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How does the ICEBREAKER work without electricity?
The ICEBREAKER utilizes a liquid wax cartridge that heats water without needing electricity. The cartridge, containing 1.4 liters of liquid wax, is ignited to provide heat that prevents water from freezing. Simply light the flame, place the water bowl on top, and it will keep your hens’ water from freezing, even in temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). This setup is especially effective for conditions below 8°C (46.4°F).
What is the heater made of?
The ICEBREAKER is constructed entirely from aluminum, a durable and heat-efficient material. Aluminum ensures that the heater can withstand outdoor conditions and provides consistent heat output, keeping your chickens’ water unfrozen during cold weather.
Is assembly required?
No, the ICEBREAKER arrives fully assembled for convenience and easy setup. All you need to do is choose a location, light the cartridge, and place your water container on top of the heater.
How do I set up and install the ICEBREAKER heater?
-
Option I (Ground Installation):
- Select a flat, stable area outside the chicken coop, preferably downwind.
- Dig a hole with dimensions of approximately 6.29″ x 6.29″ and a depth of 6.37″.
- Place the heater in the hole, ensuring the legs are secured at the bottom, with the top edge of the black container visible above the ground.
- Gently press soil around the container to stabilize it, then use a spirit level on the cover to ensure the surface is flat and parallel to the ground.
-
Option II (Surface Installation with Bricks):
- Choose a flat area outside the chicken coop, preferably downwind.
- Place the heater on the ground and insert its legs into the soil.
- Line the sides of the heater with bricks or cinder blocks to keep it stable.
- Use a spirit level to make sure the top surface is level so that the water container sits securely.
These options help ensure that the heater is stable, secure, and effective in maintaining your chickens’ water supply.

How long does the fuel last, and how do I refill the cartridge?
The liquid wax cartridge holds 1.4 liters (0.36 gallons) of fuel, which provides up to 14 days of continuous burn time. To refill:
- Lay old newsprint on a flat surface as a base.
- Remove the water container and the red aluminum cover.
- Make sure the flame is extinguished before taking out the cartridge.
- Place the cartridge on the newsprint, then pour 1.4 liters of paraffin candle oil into a measuring container.
- Insert a funnel into the cartridge’s neck and carefully pour the paraffin oil.
- After refilling, clean the funnel, replace the threaded wick, and wipe the fuel nozzle.
- Insert the cartridge back into the container, ignite it, and replace the red cover.
We recommend using high-quality paraffin oils like Firefly’s Simply Pure Paraffin Lamp Oil or NER CANDLES’ Paraffin Lamp Oil for best results.
How do I use the ICEBREAKER heater safely?
Here are the instructions for safe usage:
- Required Accessories: Paper towel, cloth, lighter, water container (1-5 gallons) made of high-temperature-resistant material (metal or plastic with a flat bottom).
- Usage Steps:
- Unscrew the safety cap from the cartridge.
- Ensure the burner nozzle is clean; wipe with a paper towel if needed.
- Light the wick, keeping it securely in the nozzle without pulling it out.
- Place the red aluminum cover on top of the container.
- Check that the flame is visible through the cover hole.
- Wipe the cover and the undersurface of the water container before placing it on top.
Note: Avoid touching the upper heating surface while the flame is lit. Use the heater only in temperatures below 8°C (46.4°F). When not in use, store the cartridge safely and reattach the safety cap.
What safety precautions should I take?
Safety is essential when using the ICEBREAKER heater. Please follow these guidelines:
- Use the heater only outdoors, and keep it out of reach of children.
- Never operate the heater when temperatures are above 8°C (46.4°F).
- If lamp oil is ingested, do not induce vomiting; seek immediate medical help.
- Properly dispose of used paper towels after cleaning the burner.
- Avoid placing flammable or non-heat-resistant materials near the heater.
- Store the heater and cartridge in a dry, safe place when not in use.
Important Warnings:
- The cartridge contains hydrocarbons that may be fatal if swallowed.
- Keep it locked and out of children’s reach.
How do I clean and store the heater during warmer months?
If temperatures exceed 8°C (46.4°F) and the heater is not in use:
- Remove the cartridge from the container.
- Clean the burner nozzle and tightly close the cartridge with the safety cap.
- Place the heater and cartridge in a dry, secure location, away from children.
Can the heater be used with any water container?
It is recommended to use a water container that holds between 1-5 gallons and is made of high-temperature-resistant material, like metal or heat-resistant plastic. For optimal performance, choose a container with a flat bottom for stable placement on the heater.
What accessories and materials are included with the ICEBREAKER?
The ICEBREAKER package includes:
